Sheltered Housing is accommodation primarily for persons over the age of 60 years who wish to live independently, but within a comfortable and secure environment. Both the Council and Housing Associations working in the borough have formed a partnership to develop a combined register of housing need, the Croydon Housing Register.
This means that if you are looking for sheltered housing to rent in the borough you only have to make one application. If you need a significant degree of personal care, “special” sheltered housing schemes may be more appropriate for you.
It is also possible to buy your own sheltered property from a private company. If you are considering this it is always important to find out what services are provided and how these are covered by the service charge. Croydon Council also operate a Mutual Exchange for Sheltered Housing for tenants.
